Control what you can control… and the markets are not one of the things anyone can control. Recent news portends an onslaught of more negative news in 2019. A recent New York Times article posted a scary headline: “Nowhere to Hide.”
Buried in that same article is the key paragraph that summarizes the author’s belief that reality is good, even if the short-term markets look bad:
We have “scant evidence that the worst-case scenario will play out. The American economy remains strong: Unemployment is near 50-year lows, and growth is steady. And it wasn’t that long ago that financial markets were feeling good about the global economy, shrugging off troublesome issues like the trade war, Britain’s exit from the European Union and the debt levels of developing nations.”1
What can we control?
We can control our spending. and nbsp;If you’ve no desire to balance a budget, then use our new technology! Just login to our new and nbsp;“Complete View” link and nbsp;on the TCA by ETRADE website. You’ll be able to link your checking, savings and other accounts. The spending is categorized for you. You can then pick up the phone and talk with your financial advisor about what matters.
We can reduce our debt. and nbsp;Think about the stress you might relieve if you relieve yourself of any more debt, including a mortgage. Talk with your financial advisor and we’ll use all our experience, powerful software and other tools, to give you peace of mind that the decision you’re making is the right one for you, today.
We can manage our taxes. and nbsp;In this last year, we’ve had massive changes to the tax code that are outside our control. Think about taxes differently now. How can you benefit from this, today? And what is right for you in the future? Learn about whether or not more (or less) money in a Roth IRA is right for you. Ask your financial advisor, “How are we going to make withdrawals? From which account do we make them first? Do we need to change anything?”
Likely, and I hope this is true for you, today’s (and tomorrow’s) headlines changed little—if anything—for your financial plans. While others around us are panicked, we are counter-cultural. We have a plan for this!
Now, let’s go back to what matters most—and what we can absolutely control—our time, our hearts and our minds. Let’s make this a fantastic end to 2018!
