Super Bowl 51 - The Old Guys Take It

Doesn't Tom Brady know he's just too old to play like that? Last Sunday, he gained more yards than anyone in Super Bowl history, scored more points in the 4th quarter than anyone in Super Bowl history and led the largest comeback in Super Bowl history. All this resulted in the first overtime game in Super Bowl history.

The press had me believe that the old guys won. They said some of the Falcons grew up watching Tom Brady win Super Bowls. That makes for a great story. I thought it would be a bit like the Boomers taking on the Millennials and winning. But like many things we read and hear about, it's just not the truth. The average age of the Falcons is 27 and the average age of the Patriots is 26. Among the starters, Tom Brady brings up the average to 27 for the Patriots, which is just as old as the Falcons. It turns out the widespread belief, propagated by the press, is wrong. If only Tom Brady looked a little more like the rest of us, it would be easier to relate to him.

Last year was an amazing year of change. Many of you have commented to me that you're glad to see it end. The press, by and large, concurs. So, I thought I'd take another spin through the year 2016, on a more positive note.

The Cubs won their first championship. The Patriots Super Bowl, of course technically in 2017, is the 2016 football season finale. And the Cavaliers gave Cleveland something to cheer about. But these are just the sports.

The better news is in the real world, where the rest of us live. We forget, at our emotional peril, the benefits of the incredible medical, technological, environmental and other breakthroughs of 2016. In summary: the optimists are winning.
